1 Thess 5:9
For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
1) God’s Wrath
a) Flood, Genesis 6:17 For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die
b) Sodom, Genesis 19
c) Cross: Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! (Rom 5:9)
d) The End: Revelation 6:16 calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb,
e)God’s wrath is different from persecution, and correction
- God allowed Israel grace, but also correction
- Israel went into captivity (slavery) and separation from the promised land…because God said so
- And he restored them
f) God’s wrath has never been doubted
- No one has ever said: “I wonder if that was God’s wrath?”
- He is clear in delivering His message.
g) Please do not confuse God’s wrath with: God’s correction, or an attack from the enemy, and always remember, YOU ARE NOT DESTINED FOR WRATH!
2) God’s Plan
a) God’s plan has never been to pour out His wrath upon us, but to take the wrath for us.
b) Jesus Christ, GOD IN FLESH, took upon Himself the FULL BORE WRATH OF HIS OWN HOLINESS AND SOVEREIGNTY
c) God does not need help pouring out His wrath:
- His people should not be instruments of Wrath
- His people should be Ministers of Reconciliation!
d) God planned, from the very beginning, to take the full measure of His own wrath, for us, to obtain SALVATION through Jesus
e) Romans 6:23 ESV For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
3) God’s Love
a) John 3
I. 16 “For God so loved the world,[a] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
II. John 3:36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
III. This is the basic, fundamental truth Jesus was teaching Nicodemous.
b) God’s wrath is not poured out on those who have faith in Christ.
c) Ephesians 3:14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family[c] in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
d) While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
